Combination of physical and virtual exhibitions, permanent and touring exhibitions
The SJTU T.D. Lee Science and Art Lecture Fund was established by Tsung-Dao Lee in 2013. SJTU holds scientific seminars and international art competitions with scientific themes to foster innovation and creative talents at the intersection of science and art.
The job of China Center of Advanced Science and Technology did in the past ten years was highly appraised at the 10th anniversary celebration meeting which was held in November 1996. By using Zhuan character, Professor Zhang Ding inscribed words: "To Probe Wu Li with Care and Reason, Free One's Body of Concern for Credit" coming from one of the Du Fu's famous poems for congratulation on the 10th anniversary of CCAST, which reveals the philosophy of science study.
In May 1988, Wu Zuoren, an outstanding contemporary painter, created a theme painting for the International Symposium on "Two-dimensional Strongly Correlated Electronic System" held by the China Center of Advanced Science and Technology Center. From the ancient Chinese philosophical point of view, Wu Zuoren thought that all complexities are generated from simplicities. Just as Lao Zi said in his Moral Code: "The Tao creates one, One creates two, Two creates three, and Three creates all things." Wu Zuoren uses a modern Tai Chi diagram to give the duality between Yin and Yang a new depth, which has now become the symbol of the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider, Tsung-Dao Lee once said that this painting well embodies the full dynamics of the universe.
In 1988, Huang Zhou was invited by Tsung-Dao Lee to create a theme painting for the International Symposium on "Particle Physics and Cosmology" held by the China Center of Advanced Science and Technology at Nanjing University in June that year, Huang Zhou blends the theme of cosmology with the Chinese myth of the heavenly horse, the horse looks down at the motion of heavenly bodies. Huang Zhou always painted donkeys through his life, and this painting was created after he communicated with Tsung-Dao Lee about science and art. It has miraculous effect that no matter from which angle you look at it, you always feel that the horse in the picture is galloping head on towards you. This painting not only has the meaning of universe science. but also shows the universality of truth, and also symbolizes the new development of Chinese astronomy. Mr. Huang Zhou also specially inscribed the four characters "Heavenly Horse Traveling through Space".
The China Center of Advanced Science and Technology held an international Symposium on "Development and Application of Free Electron Laser" in May 1995.lnspired by Tsung-Dao Lee's poem: "Han Mirror Sends Signals across Thousands of Miles, Free Electron Beams Lase throughout the Universe", Professor Yuan Yunfu created a theme painting. This painting expresses a kind of expectation and blessing, from the Great Wall bonfire stations to Han Dynasty bronze mirror and to laser generators, science and technology are developing and advancing in the Cultural exchange of Eastern and Western civilizations.
In May 1994, cartoon master Hua Junwu created a theme painting for China Center of Advanced Science and Technology after he discussed science and art with Tsung-Dao Lee. In superconductive state, when two electrons are tied into a Cooper pair, electrical resistance becomes zero, and superconductivity then appears. In contrast, the single electron is restrained and confined. This Two Electrons Tied Together Have Two Wings and become superconductivity, Flying as a Single One Meets Resistance uses flying bees to vividly depicts the characteristics of the "high-temperature superconductors and the C60 family" in physics.
2015 is exactly one hundred years after Einstein published his theory of General Relativity. Professor Lu Xiaobo, Dean of the Academy of Arts & Design of Tsinghua University, created the theme painting "Commemorating the Centenary of the Publication of General Relativity" for the third "SJTU T.D. Lee Science and Art Lecture Fund" series. The painting uses Einstein and modern cosmology based on general activity to convey the wonderful connotation of the blending of science and art to the world.
